Assistant Store Manager – Detling Community Store, Detling, Maidstone


Hours: 20 per week

Salary: £10 per hour

Contract: Permanent


At Detling Community Store we are more than just a store, we are a destination providing an excellent service experience in the beautiful North Downs village of Detling, Kent.

As part of our success and continued growth we are seeking an Assistant Store Manager to support us in achieving our vision – “to be the best award-winning community store in Kent”. The successful candidate will work with our Store Manager to ensure that the shop, post office and café/take away service runs efficiently and continues to support our ambition of long-term sustainability. The successful candidate will have:

  • Previous experience within a retail or catering setting, supervisory experience preferred

  • The ability to provide exceptional customer service

  • A good understanding of food hygiene in a retail environment

  • An innovative and creative nature with the ability to develop new concepts to increase sales

  • Post Office skills (or training will be provided)

We are seeking a team player who will support the supervision of our volunteer team – therefore an appreciation, understanding and an ability to manage volunteers is critical. This role is a hands-on role with the successful candidate having the opportunity to make a real difference to the local community.


The Assistant Store Manager will be required to be flexible to cover core hours of the store with average weekly hours of 20 hours per week. There will be the need to do more hours some weeks to cover the managers holiday time. therefore flexibility is critical.


A full clean driving licence is essential.

The Role


This role will require the successful candidate to support the Store Manager in:

  • Ensuring efficient operation of the store, post office and cafe to ensure sustainable financial performance.

  • Supervising, coordinating and motivating a team of volunteers.

  • Ensuring our customers are provided with exceptional service.

  • Delivering exceptional store standards.

  • Identifying and implementing improvements for both the customer experience and store performance.
